Puckaway

Lake Puckaway located in Green Lake and Marquette counties is a shallow (3 feet average depth), 5,013-acre drainage lake that was historically a natural widening of the Fox River. Lake Puckaway is approximately 8 miles long and approximately 1.5 miles wide. It has 27.3 miles of shoreline - most of which is marshy and undeveloped. Lake Puckaway has a large watershed of over 442,000 acres.

 

Father Marquette described Lake Puckaway in 1673 as “it is easy to lose one’s way, especially as the river is so full of wild rice that it is difficult to find the channel.”

​Lake Puckaway is an excellent recreation lake with activities including fishing, swimming, boating, bird watching, and duck hunting.

The
District

The Lake Puckaway Protection & Rehabilitation District was established in 1977. Lake districts are governmental bodies with elected or appointed leaders and annual budgets funded from tax levies or special assessments. The purpose of a district is to maintain, protect, and improve the quality of a lake and its watershed for the mutual good of the members and the lake environment.

Protect and enhance the quality of Lake Puckaway's fish and wildlife. 

 

Promote ecologically balanced water levels, water clarity, and shoreline habitat.

 

Promote the history and proper management of the lake. 

 

Promote the education, research, and information sharing between organizations, individuals, government bodies, and the general public for the protection, preservation and improvement of Lake Puckaway.

Facts

The name "Puckaway" is believed to come from the word "Apuckawa" meaning "the place where wild rice grows."

​

Lake Puckaway produced Wisconsin's current state record for northern pike! The fish was caught on August 6, 1952. It weighed 38 pounds and was 45.5 inches long!
